Fermium was discovered by Albert Ghiorso & Berkely Lab. (US) in 1953. Named in honour of Enrico Fermi. It is a synthetic radioactive metal. Fermium was produced by bombarding lighter transuranium elements with still lighter particles or by neutron capture.
